Steve Tao is an experienced content creator of television, film, and digital media. He started his career as a film executive at Walt Disney Pictures working on films such as THE THREE MUSKETEERS and WHITE SQUALL. He then moved to television and became Head of Drama for ABC Television, where he oversaw the Emmy Award-winning dramas THE PRACTICE and NYPD BLUE. As Senior Vice President of original series and movies at VH1, he ran both the New York and Los Angeles development offices. As producer, he launched Gale Anne Hurd’s television company Valhalla Television (WALKING DEAD). As head of scripted development at FremantleMedia, he initiated the sale of the company’s international formats to the US and incubated the company’s digital series into television ideas that led to Fremantle’s first series for Comedy Central. As an executive for Bad Robot, he developed 11/22/63, ROADIES, and WESTWORLD, and forged strategic partnerships, including one with the United Nation.
He launched a sci-fi fiction website, Recursor.tv, that showcases original series, movies, and proofs of concept. Since 2017, he has worked at The CW as an executive in the Current Department, overseeing shows such as RIVERDALE, SUPERNATURAL, and ALL-AMERICAN. A native Californian, he earned his B.A. at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California and an M.B.A. from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. He currently volunteers as an Advisory Board Member of the Coalition of Asian Pacifics In Entertainment (www.capeusa.org) and of his alumni entertainment organization Claremont Entertainment & Media.
